Somebody groans. Somebody rolls their eyes. Somebody says "Dad, please." And somewhere, a man is deeply, quietly satisfied with himself.
The dad joke is undefeated and it is time we admitted why.
The Groan Is The Point
Here is the great misunderstanding about dad jokes. People think the teller is trying to get a laugh and failing.
He is not. He is trying to get the groan. The groan is the win condition. A laugh would actually be a disappointment.
Once you understand that, the whole genre reveals itself as far more sophisticated than anybody gives it credit for.
The Anatomy Of A Proper One
A real dad joke has strict requirements. You cannot just say something unfunny and claim the title.
- It must be clean. A dad joke that needs an apology is not a dad joke, it is just a joke told badly.
- It must be obvious in hindsight. The listener has to feel they should have seen it coming.
- It must be delivered completely deadpan. No grin until the groan lands. Then all the grin at once.
- It must be repeatable. Same joke, same audience, next year. This is a feature.
Why It Survives Every Generation
Comedy trends come and go. What was hilarious twenty years ago is often uncomfortable now, and rightly so in plenty of cases.
The dad joke never has that problem, because it was never punching at anybody. It is a pun. Puns do not age, they do not offend, and they cost nothing.
That is why it outlives every other joke format on earth. It is the cockroach of comedy, and I mean that with total admiration.
How To Get Better At Them
You want in? It is genuinely learnable.
Listen for words with two meanings. That is the whole skill. Somebody says a word that could mean something else and you take the wrong meaning, out loud, with a straight face.
That is it. That is the entire craft, and you can practise it at every meal for the rest of your life.
Own It Properly
If you are going to be the one telling them, do not be shy about it. Half-committing to a dad joke is the only way to genuinely fail at one.
Say it. Wait for the groan. Then look extremely pleased with yourself, because you have earned it.
