We have all watched it happen. Somebody starts a joke they clearly find hilarious, and then it dies slowly in front of everyone while they explain the setup twice.
It does not have to be like this. Joke telling is a skill and almost nobody is taught it.
Mistake One: Announcing It
"Oh, this is so funny, you're going to love this." Never do this. You have just promised something and now you have to deliver it, and the audience is grading rather than listening.
Start the joke. Just start it. Let them work out it is a joke on their own.
Mistake Two: Too Much Setup
The setup exists to make the punchline land. Every word that does not do that job is actively working against you.
If your joke needs four sentences of context, cut it to two and see if it still works. It almost always does, and it lands twice as hard.
Mistake Three: Rushing The Gap
This is the big one, and it is the difference between amateurs and people who are funny at parties.
There is a pause before the punchline. A tiny one, less than a second. That gap is where the listener's brain leans forward. Skip it and the punchline arrives before anybody is ready to receive it.
Say the setup. Stop. Then the punchline. Practise it out loud once and you will feel the difference immediately.
Mistake Four: Laughing First
If you laugh at your own punchline before the audience does, you have told them how to feel instead of letting them feel it.
Deliver it flat. Let them go first. Then join in as much as you like.
Mistake Five: Explaining It
It did not land. Painful, but it happens to everyone.
Do not explain it. A joke explained is a joke buried. Say "anyway" and move on cheerfully, and you will have salvaged your dignity and probably got a bigger laugh from the recovery than the joke would have earned.
The Only Rule That Really Matters
Be the person laughing at other people's jokes more than you tell your own.
Everybody remembers the funniest person in the room. But everybody LIKES the person who laughed at them, and that is worth considerably more.
