Every family is a comedy troupe that never auditioned and cannot be fired. The roles get assigned early and almost nobody escapes theirs.
Let us go through the cast.
The Eldest: The Straight Man
Not the funniest, and secretly furious about it. The eldest is the one everything happens TO, which makes them essential and completely uncredited.
Every good comedy needs somebody reacting with mounting disbelief. That is the eldest, at every family gathering, for their entire life.
The Middle Child: The Actual Comedian
Statistically and observably, the funniest person in most families. This is not a coincidence.
The middle child got neither the automatic authority of the eldest nor the automatic attention of the youngest, so they developed the only remaining route to being noticed. They got funny, out of pure necessity, and it worked.
The Youngest: The Chaos Agent
Not telling jokes. Being the joke, on purpose, with total commitment and zero shame.
The youngest will do the thing everybody else was too embarrassed to do. They have no dignity to protect because they were never given any, and it has made them completely fearless.
Dad: The Pun Machine
Discussed at length elsewhere. Deadpan delivery, groan-based scoring system, an inexhaustible supply.
Notably, he finds himself hilarious, which is genuinely half the reason it works.
Mum: The Assassin
The most dangerous comedian in the building and the one everybody underestimates.
She does not tell jokes. She waits, says one short sentence at exactly the right moment, and demolishes somebody completely while appearing to be talking about the weather.
Nobody in that family has ever won an exchange with her. Nobody ever will.
The Grandparent: Unbeatable
Absolute champion. Total immunity. Will say the most outrageous thing anybody has said all year and receive no consequences whatsoever.
They have earned this and there is no arguing with it. The rest of the family just sits there while it happens.
