Somebody, somewhere, has just said "that's the lowest form of humour" about a pun. That person is wrong and I intend to be extremely annoying about it.
The Charge Against Puns
The accusation is that a pun is cheap. That it requires no wit, just a coincidence of sound. That it is the comedy of people who cannot manage a real joke.
Let us examine that, because it falls apart almost immediately.
What A Pun Actually Requires
To make a pun you have to hold two meanings of one word in your head at the same time, spot which one the other person intended, and construct a sentence that works on both readings simultaneously.
In real time. In conversation. In about half a second.
That is a genuinely difficult piece of mental gymnastics, and the fact that the result sounds effortless is exactly why people undervalue it. Everything that looks easy took skill.
The Best Comedians Are Pun Merchants
Go and look at the one-liner greats. The very sharpest joke writers in history are almost all playing with double meanings.
The difference between a "clever wordplay" joke that gets applause and a "pun" that gets a groan is frequently nothing but the delivery and how obvious the setup was.
Same mechanism. Different reputation. That is a marketing problem, not a comedy problem.
Why The Groan Happens
Here is my actual theory, and I am fairly confident about it.
People groan at puns because they are annoyed they did not spot it first. The groan is not disapproval. It is the sound of somebody being beaten to something they could see clearly the moment it was pointed out.
That is the most flattering possible reaction to a joke. Nobody groans at something they could not have thought of.
In Defence Of Being Groaned At
So the next time you make a pun and the whole table sighs at you, understand what actually just happened.
You performed a fast piece of linguistic acrobatics and everybody in the room immediately understood it. That is not the lowest form of comedy. That is a room full of people who all got the joke, which is more than most comedians manage.
Take the groan. Wear it like a medal. Make another one immediately.
